CORPORATE TARGETS

Every five years, Cargill sets global targets for health, safety, and environment. The effort to attain them by the end of 2010 is coordinated by the Environment, Health, and Safety area (EHS).

Introduce safe workplace behavior processes in 100% of the units – Cargill Brazil has already completed the introduction of its process of safe behavior in all its units approximately one year in advance.

Reduce the Reportable Injury Frequency Rate (RIFR) to 3.0 – This indicator reports the frequency of illness and injury-related sick leave per 200,000 man-hours worked. The index in Brazil in 2009 was 0.9, not including Seara data. Since 2005, Cargill has also included in its safety statistics the figures for accidents involving service providers working under the company’s direct supervision.

Improve the Company’s energy efficiency by 20% in comparison with 2001 indicators – Greater awareness of best practices identified in the company’s units around the world has brought about solid gains. Globally, the company achieved, at the end of 2009, an increase of 12% per production unit and 25% for every US$ 1,000 dollars in sales. Although it has not attained this target, Cargill has consolidated its knowledge about the skills, management system, and technology needed for this.

Cargill’s Strategic Intent is to become the partner of choice for the stakeholders with which it interacts by the year 2015.

Attain a level of 10% in use of renewable energy sources for company business – Cargill has already reached this goal worldwide (12%). In Brazil, the company develops projects of this nature in various units, adopting the burning of biomass as a source, which already accounts for 62% of its energy matrix in the country.

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8% – The main sources of atmospheric emissions are monitored at its Business Units in relation to NOx and SOx (nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide). In respect of gas emissions, the company established an international committee on the subject, which also discusses climate change. In Brazil, it has compiled an inventory of emissions in each of the Business Units. Despite impressive results in several countries, the indicator was not achieved, although a 2.4% overall reduction in greenhouse-gas intensity was recorded.

Reduce potable water use by 2% – The company adopts waste treatment procedures in various plants in order to reduce water consumption and increase reuse, and it had seen a 3% rise in efficiency by the end of 2009.
